Vale denied by Simpson heroics
Bradford won through to the Johnstone's Paint Trophy Northern Section semi-final after beating Port Vale 5-4 on penalties, after the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
Defender Steve Williams converted the decisive penalty after City's goalkeeper Simon Eastwood had saved three of Vale's efforts in the shoot-out.
It was Bradford's second successive penalty shootout victory in the competition, having overcome Notts County in similar fashion in the previous round.
Port Vale took a 1-0 half-time lead after John McCombe put them ahead after 28 minutes from Tommy Fraser's cross.
Michael Flynn equalised after 49 minutes with a header from substitute James O'Brien's corner before leading scorer James Hanson headed them into the lead after 78 minutes from Luke O'Brien's in-swinging corner.
However, Port Vale equalised to set-up the penalty shootout when Robert Taylor scored with a low left-foot drive after good work from McCombe, but they were denied by Eastwood's heroics.
