Mariners progress following shoot-out success
Grimsby progressed to the next round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy as they beat Chesterfield 4-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw at Saltergate.
The Spireites were the better side in the 90 minutes but Jamie Ward and Phil Picken missed from the spot while Town scored all four of their penalties.
Former Grimsby striker Jack Lester fired Chesterfield into an 18th minute lead against last season's beaten finalists but Nathan Jarman equalised in the 32nd minute after a fumble from goalkeeper Tommy Lee.
Lloyd Kerry put Chesterfield back in front in the 52nd minute from a Ward cross but Grimsby hit back again when Danny North headed in 12 minutes from time.
Chesterfield had a goal disallowed and a header cleared off the line in the closing minutes but Grimsby kept their nerve in the shoot-out with Jarman netting the winning penalty.
