Clayton Donaldson and Shaun Miller scored either side of half-time as Crewe defeated Northampton 2-0 on Saturday.
Byron Moore had the first sight of goal for the Railwaymen but he fired his volley straight at keeper Chris Dunn, while at the other end, Liam Davis's mishit cross nearly caught out Crewe keeper Rhys Taylor, who had to tip the ball onto the crossbar. Dean Beckwith stopped Matt Tootle netting at the far post before almost putting the visitors in front with a cross-cum-shot that hit the crossbar though Donaldson should have put Crewe ahead when clean through on goal but Dunn came out on top in the pair's one-on-one. The striker then blew another one-on-one wide when Tootle picked him out with a pinpoint long-ball. But it was third time lucky for Donaldson two minutes before the break when he lifted Moore's pass over Dunn and into the net. Miller doubled the lead in the 59th minute after taking Danny Blanchett's cross on the turn and sidefooting home. Abdul Osman went close for the Cobblers with a 25-yard strike which was only inches from finding the net.
