Groningen had been up among the title chasers just a month or so ago but their campaign has started to unravel over the past few weeks.
They went into the clash with Utrecht having lost three in a row, and it was soon to become four as Demouge made the game's decisive contribution on the hour mark.
The result extended Utrecht's unbeaten run to nine matches, although their previous six had all been draws.
Utrecht remain eighth in the standings ahead of the rest of the weekend's action, while Groningen are just three points above them in fifth.
