New setback for Sagnol

Bayern's Willy Sagnol faces a long spell out after undergoing an Achilles tendon operation.

Full-back could be out for three months after Achilles surgery

Bayern Munich defender Willy Sagnol will face a lengthy period on the sidelines after undergoing an Achilles tendon operation. The 31-year-old French international went under the knife on Monday just hours after club doctors diagnosed the problem. No details of how long Sagnol will be sidelined have been released, although the club's official website says a 'long break' will be necessary. The news comes as a massive blow to the long-serving defender as he missed much of last season's double-winning campaign with a knee injury and then a slipped disc. Sagnol's absence means that new Bayern boss Jurgen Klinsmann is likely to turn to Christian Lell to take the right-back spot. Bayern open the defence of their Bundesliga crown against Hamburg at the Allianz Arena on 15th August.
