Striker signs four-year contract with Bundesliga club

Werder Bremen new-boy Joseph Akpala has expressed his delight at joining the Bundesliga club after a three-year pursuit. The 25-year-old earlier this week signed a four-year contract at Weserstadion after a deal was agreed with Club Brugge having previously been thrown into doubt by Bremen's German Cup exit. And Akpala now hopes to make his debut in Saturday afternoon's league game against Hamburg after first being contacted by Bremen in 2009. "Three years ago, Werder Bremen started approaching me," he told Kreiszeitung Syke newspaper. "Ever since then I had the desire to play in the Bundesliga. "I have become a keen follower of Bundesliga football in the meantime. I also experienced some of my closest mates moving to clubs in the Bundesliga. "I had been playing against sides from the Bundesliga with Club Brugge in the past, most notably against Hannover in the Europa League. I know what it is like." Meanwhile, Poland international defender Sebastian Boenisch has been allowed to train with Bremen's reserve side in order to maintain his fitness. Boenisch is currently a free agent after rejecting a contract extension at Bremen and earlier in the summer he failed to impress in a trial at Premier League Stoke City.
