Alexander pleased with point

Graham Alexander says he was happy with a point from his first game in charge of Fleetwood after the 0-0 draw with Southend.

The former Preston and Burnley defender was appointed on Thursday and had spent just a few hours with his players ahead of the clash - which gave him his first real opportunity to assess his squad. He said: "There are things we need to work on and things that pleased us but the lads' commitment to the team can't be faulted. "We were put under pressure by Southend. First half I thought it was quite frustrating. Southend were probably the better team. "But we came back into it. The introduction of Jamie Milligan gave us a little bit more creativity in there and lifted the team a little bit. "In the second half we found a lot more width and created a couple of opportunities. We created the space to do that. I'm pleased with a point and a clean sheet." Southend duo Anthony Straker and Gavin Tomlin both converted in the opening half, only to see their efforts ruled offside by referee Darren Deadman. Steven Gillespie could have snatched it for the home side late on, but his shot from nine yards sailed over the bar. Alexander, with 1,024 professional games under his belt, admitted it was a big change watching from the touchline. He said: "I was up and down all over the technical area, the fourth official had to speak to me. I must have wanted to get onto the pitch."
