Spireites promoted without playing, Shakers secure valuable win

League Two leaders Chesterfield were promoted without playing on Good Friday, while Bury won to take a major step towards their own promotion. Chesterfield - who play at Oxford on Saturday - secured their promotion after third-placed Wycombe were held to a goalless stalemate by fellow promotion chasers Torquay at Plainmoor. Tom Lees was the hero for Bury as his 56th minute effort proved the difference against Lincoln at Gigg Lane. The victory puts the second-placed Shakers - who have three games remaining - eight points ahead of Shrewsbury in fourth. But the Shrews have a game in hand and, if they can beat Hereford on Saturday, they will leapfrog Wycombe into the last automatic promotion berth following the goalless stalemate at Plainmoor. The draw means the Chairboys are currently two points above the Shrews, while the Gulls remain in fifth, five points off the automatic promotion places. Stevenage continue in sixth despite seeing their eight-game unbeaten run end at Southend. The visitors were reduced to ten men when Peter Winn received his marching orders two minutes before the interval for serious foul play and the Shrimpers made their numerical advantage pay when Barry Corr slotted home with nine minutes remaining. Crewe came from behind to beat Morecambe 2-1 in a mid-table clash at Gresty Road. Garry Hunter put the visitors ahead after 58 minutes but Clayton Donaldson earned the spoils with a late brace (72, 90). Northampton picked up a precious point in their battle to beat the drop in the day's late game, with Liam Davis' last-gasp goal salvaging a 2-2 draw against play-off hopefuls Rotherham. A Paul Rodgers own goal and Ryan Taylor effort had put the Millers in control at half-time, before Leon McKenzie replied for Gary Johnson's team midway through the second period and Davis netted in stoppage time.
