Head coach sacked following draw against Ethiopia

Pitso Mosimane has been sacked as South Africa head coach following a disappointing start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. Bafana Bafana were held to a 1-1 draw in their opening match of the campaign at home to Ethiopia in Phokeng, Rustenburg, prompting the South Africa Football Association (SAFA) to take immediate action. Ex-skipper Steve Komphela will now act as caretaker manager for the country's next two games, starting with Botswana in Gaborone on Saturday, before an international friendly against Gabon in Johannesburg later this month. A SAFA statement read: "Drawing in the last 15 minutes of the game (against Ethiopia) made us realise we had to act now." Mosimane took over from Carlos Parreira in August 2010 and leaves with a record of five wins, seven draws and three defeats from his 15 games in charge. Gordon Igesund, who guided Moroka Swallows to second place in last season's South African Premiership, has been touted as a long-term replacement.
