How far will England get in the World Cup? The Soccer Saturday panel answer the big question...

How far will Capello's men get?

It's just a few days until the World Cup kicks off - and our panel of experts are here to tell you exactly what you can expect in South Africa. Here on skysports.com, we've brought together the studio stars of Soccer Saturday - Jeff Stelling, Matt Le Tissier, Paul Merson, Phil Thompson and Charlie Nicholas - to share their thoughts on football's showpiece tournament. For the last fortnight, the gang have been debating some of the big World Cup talking points and giving you a flavour of what you can expect when the action kicks off. And now we've asked them the question that every England fan wants to know. How far will Fabio Capello's men go in South Africa?

skysports.com: What would be a good achievement for England at this World Cup and how far do you expect them to go? MATT: England are contenders, there's no doubt about that. I'm pretty optimistic we can go a long way in this tournament. I don't see any reason why we can't make the semi-finals and from that point on, if we get a little bit of luck at the right time, we can go on and win it. Hopefully we'll score some goals and won't have to rely on penalties this time! MERSE: A few weeks ago I thought England had every chance, but I've changed my mind a little bit after watching the friendly matches. We played very average sides in Mexico and Japan, who will be lucky to get out of their groups, and we looked a distance away from being world beaters. Maybe it's a good thing because the country might not be as expectant as they were. There's a lot of pressure on the players and maybe it will work in our favour. MATT: I think England will score goals. I looked at the friendly against Mexico and we had eight shots on target and scored three goals. That's a good ratio and if we create more chances we should score more goals. THOMMO: I think England can go all the way to the final, but if they are to win it everything will have to be in place. You have to keep your best players fit, the preparation will have to be perfect and the players will have to have the right mentality to keep themselves out of trouble and not pick up too many yellow cards. On top of that you need that little bit of luck in and around the big important games come the quarter-finals. That's where you have to hope the good teams like Brazil and Spain have an off day and get beaten 1-0, by you or even someone else. MERSE: What I will say is if England win their group they'll get to the semis. After that, who knows? But I worry about the group straight away. Because the other teams are so average, they're going to put 10 men behind the ball and that's a worry. The USA will be well-organised and well-drilled and if we only draw that game we'll be behind the eight ball straight away. THOMMO: England need to do what Spain did and just crack one of these major tournaments and I think if they can do that it will make things a lot easier for the next generations going into European Championships and World Cups. CHARLIE: I think England will at least get to the quarter-finals, maybe even the semi-finals. I've been trying to work out who they'll possibly be playing and it looks like they will eventually bump into Germany. I certainly expect nothing less than the quarter-finals for England and with the current set-up I think that would be a decent achievement, but not a great achievement. Last eight is the least they should expect, to be quite honest. JEFF: A great tournament for England would be to get to the semi-finals. We've got a decent group, but we could meet some old adversaries along the way, including Germany in the last 16 and France in the last eight. But as long as the players don't get stage fright I would expect them to beat both, so I fancy us to get to the semi-finals. MERSE: I just worry that we've got a bad 45 minutes in us. We saw it against Mexico, we saw it against Japan and we saw it against Egypt. When you get to knock-out football in the World Cup you can't afford to do that.
