Southend came from two goals behind at Roots Hall to snatch a point against luckless Carlisle.
The visitors had taken the lead early on through Scott Dobie who, after just six minutes, converted a powerful header deep inside the penalty area.
Evan Horwood was involved in the build up to that goal and he had a hand in the second which came just minutes later.
Horwood's sublime cross found a perfectly positioned Ben Marshall who scored in similar fashion - heading home from close range to double the visitors' lead inside the first quarter.
But they were pegged back just 10 minutes later when Franck Moussa's shot from the edge of the penalty area slipped past Adam Collin into the bottom right corner.
And minutes later the Shrimpers levelled the scoreline as skipper Adam Barrett headed home from close range.
Barrett was sent off soon after for his second bookable offence after a challenge on Peter Murphy which left the home side with 10 men for the final quarter.
The point sees Southend edge to within three points of fellow strugglers Exeter.
