Deeney sees red for deliberate handball in stalemate
Stockport lurched closer to relegation from League One as they were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Walsall.
Jabo Ibehre fired the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 19th minute after Troy Deeney had seen red for deliberate handball. But Walsall refused to be beaten and levelled two minutes before the break when Julian Gray volleyed in from an acute angle.
The hosts impressed early on and almost went in front after 20 seconds when George Donnelly's shot forced Rene Gilmartin into a smart one-handed save.
Stockport did take the lead when Deeney blocked Paul Huntington's shot on the line with his hand and saw red, leaving Ibehre to confidently convert the resulting spot-kick.
Gilmartin then produced a superb point-blank save to deny teenager James Vincent. And Walsall made the most of their let-off as Manny Smith headed across the six-yard box for Gray to slot home.
Stockport went on to dominate the remainder of the game but could not find a winner, with Jemal Johnson, Ibehre and Danny Swailes all seeing chances go begging.
