Rovers battle to Trophy triumph

Tranmere were made to fight hard against Accrington for a place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy.

Rovers secure slender success over Stanley

League One Tranmere were made to fight hard for a 1-0 win over Accrington which booked their place in the second round of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy. Edrissa Sonko took advantage of a defensive error three minutes into the second half to score the game's only goal and put Rovers through. The Merseysiders made most of the first-half running without really threatening a breakthrough. Bas Savage fired wide and Chris Shuker over in the early minutes, while Sonko could not test substitute keeper Kenny Arthur after the best move of the half. The visitors struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances, and lost goalkeeper Ian Dunbavin with a knee injury after 24 minutes with Arthur taking over. The goal came after David Worrell was bundled off the ball by Craig Curran who went on to set up Sonko for a fine finish from 10 yards in the 48th minute. Stanley kept going well but simply could not break down the solid home defence and Shuker went close to a second for the home side.
