Tranmere knocked Stockport out of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw at Prenton Park.

Having already been beaten by Accrington earlier in the competition, Stanley's subsequent resignation for fielding an ineligible player allowed Rovers a second bite of the cherry and, although it was not pretty, the scraped through in the end, getting the better of Paul Simpson's men on Tuesday night. With quality in short supply, the 90 minutes ended goalless, with both sides trading plenty of efforts from distance. Tranmere's Joss Labadie worked Stockport keeper Matt Glennon on a couple of occasions, and Stockport's Wes Fletcher failed to make the most of a slip by Scott Wootton. That was the nearest either side came, though, and the game went straight to penalties, as is the way in this competition. George Donnelly missed for Stockport early on, and after successful strikes from Ian Thomas-Moore, Labadie, Wootton and Sammy Marrow, Peter Gulacsi's save from Adam Griffin meant a progression to the next round for Les Parry's men and an area quarter-final meeting away to Bury.
