Given the Augusta exploits of his famed countrymen Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal - both dual winners of the Green Jacket - it was always assumed that Sergio would follow in their footsteps. But his Masters record is surprisingly modest. It got off to a great start when he finished low amateur on debut in 1999 but since then he's managed just two top 10s, the last one back in 2004. In fact, a closer inspection of his scores reveals that between 2003 and 2009 he managed to break par just once in 18 rounds at Augusta National. Some of the poor performances coincided with a career slump that saw him so disillusioned that he took a break from the game although the missed cuts in 2005, 2007 and 2008 came during years when he had near misses in at least one of the other three majors. His poor putting is a likely reason for his Augusta disappointments and it's his improvement in that department that gives Garcia fresh hope for 2012. Being more comfortable on the greens and finding happiness off the course helped Sergio rediscover his mojo in 2011 and he rounded the year off with two European Tour wins in Spain. It means his quest for a first major is back on the agenda again and, despite his struggles at Augusta, it would be dangerous to count him out.
