Ever since his first PGA Tour victory - the 2007 Travelers Championship - Mahan has been touted as one of America's next big things. And after winning the Accenture Match Play title in February - thus becoming only the sixth man to win two or more WGC events - the Californian is now starting to live up to the early promise. Mahan has plenty of history at Augusta having played there as an amateur in 2003. He performed with merit, finishing tied 28th, although it was another five years before he would return to the Masters as a pro. The reacquaintance with Augusta National wasn't a happy one as he missed the cut but the following year, in 2009, he burst out of the blocks with a six-under 66 and went on to finish 10th. A second top ten followed in 2010 when he posted eighth place so the idea that Mahan's poor chipping will stop him performing at Augusta National looks a bit of a red herring. Mahan says he feels comfortable on the fast greens and, as one of the best drivers of the ball in world golf, he's often playing his second shots from favourable positions. Having beaten the best in WGC events, the natural progression for Mahan now is to win a major and, having broken par in eight of his last 10 rounds at Augusta, the Masters could easily be where he makes the big breakthrough.
