Everything you need to know about the Japanese

Japan have played at every World Cup, suffering some of tournament's heaviest defeats.

Japan have played at every World Cup, suffering some of tournament's heaviest defeats. In 1995, they were beaten 145-17 by the All Blacks and while they have improved significantly since then, they're still very much a minnow nation. They are, however, coming off their first ever victory at the Pacific Nations Cup, where wins over Tonga and Fiji handed them their inaugural title. They will be targeting their pool matches against Tonga and Canada as opportunities to add to their solitary World Cup win.

Strengths

Japan have always played their rugby with natural attacking flare and, under coach John Kirwan, they've developed a style that encompasses a little more structure and direction. They have some pace and skill out wide and with a lion share of possession against Tonga and Canada, they should play some vastly entertaining rugby.

Weaknesses

Defence has always been Japan's Achilles heel, evidenced by the 206 points scored against them in 2007. Their tackling has improved under Kirwan, but they will struggle to contain the impressive attacks of the All Blacks and France. Their scrum is sure to come under pressure in New Zealand as well.
