The scout reports...

Saido Berahino is West Brom's man of the moment and is emerging as one of England's few great striking hopes. We check on whether he could be the next big thing for the Three Lions.

Born in Burundi, Berahino only moved to the UK in 2003 when his mother was granted asylum. At this point, aged just ten, he could not speak English.

But just 12 months later, Berahino was snapped up by West Brom's academy after impressing on trial following a stint with local side Phoenix United.

Berahino was soon making strides through the youth system and in 2009 his talent was spotted by England when he was called up to the Under-16s. He has gone on to play for every age group up to Under-21s, who he made his debut for earlier this year.

At West Brom, he was given his first senior deal in the summer of 2011 when he was handed a one-year contract.

And he was given his first taste of first-team football as he was loaned out to Northampton Town where he would spend three months, scoring six goals in 14 appearances.

He was loaned out soon after to Brentford and again impressed with four goals in seven games, but he fell out with Bees boss Uwe Rosler and West Brom recalled him.

His performances in the lower leagues saw him promoted into West Brom's first team and he was given his Baggies debut in August 2012 against Yeovil in the League Cup.

Another loan spell followed at Peterborough, but his time at London Road was cut shot by a knee injury.

Berahino impressed during pre-season and was handed his first start for West Brom in the League Cup tie with Newport. He marked his full debut with a hat-trick and, unsurprisingly, he is now a fully fledged member of Steve Clarke's first-team squad.

Although viewed as a striker, Berahino can also play in a wide right role and has great vision, speed and finishing ability.

Clarke has yet to hand him a Premier League start but is aware he has to manage his fitness carefully and does not want to over-burden his young striker.

Berahino is perhaps handicapped by the fact West Brom are currently struggling in the league and have also brought in the likes of Victor Anichebe, Stephane Sessegnon and Matej Vydra.

But many still believe that Berahino could become an important figure for West Brom this season.

The scout says...

Berahino has all the tools to make it at the top level and West Brom are clearly nurturing their burgeoning talent.

Whether he will get his chance quickly enough remains to be seen, but with England Under-21s likely to rely on him in the coming season, that will only improve his chances.
